01 Electrical · CCTV installation
CCTV installation, paid on approval.
Most CCTV that disappoints was installed to cover a compound in general rather than to answer a specific question. Deciding what you actually need to see — the gate, the entrance, the generator — changes where cameras go and how many you need.
02 What the job involves
What you are actually paying for
Camera siting, cabling, recorders and remote viewing setup.
Also asked for as: security camera installation · surveillance camera
- Deciding what each camera is for before choosing how many to install
- Siting for light conditions, since a camera facing the morning sun records a silhouette
- Cabling and power, including protecting runs where they cross a compound
- Recorder setup with enough storage for the retention period you want
- Remote viewing configured and tested on your own phone before sign-off
03 What moves the price
Why two quotes differ
Quotes arrive sorted by total, which makes comparison easy and misleading in equal measure. These are the variables worth checking before you decide one is cheaper.
- 01
Number of cameras and resolution
- 02
Cable runs and whether they can be surface-fixed or need chasing
- 03
Recorder storage capacity, which decides how many days you can look back
- 04
Whether night vision or a separate infrared illuminator is required
04 Questions
Worth asking first
- 01
How many cameras do I actually need?
- Fewer than most quotes suggest, if they are placed deliberately. Two cameras covering the gate and the main entrance usually answer more real questions than six spread evenly around a compound. Decide what you need to be able to prove, then place cameras for that.
- 02
How long will the footage be kept?
- That is a storage decision, so ask for the retention period in days to be stated in the quote. A system that overwrites after two days is close to useless for anything you discover on a Monday morning.
